Notes

Original spelling, capitalization, and punctuation have been retained in all quoted sources, with bracketed insertions used only when deemed helpful for sense.

[1] Quotations herein from the Star are taken from the transcriptions available at http://www.centerplace.org/history/ems/. This archive follows the original text of the 1832–34 issues of the Star rather than the revised text of the 1835 reprinting. Because the original eight-page installments of the Star did not include page numbers, they have been added in brackets, following the editorial method used in The Joseph Smith Papers (see Robin Scott Jensen, Robert J. Woodford, and Steven C. Harper, eds., Revelations and Translations, Volume 2: Published Revelations, vol. 2 of the Revelations and Translations series of The Joseph Smith Papers, ed. Dean C. Jessee, Ronald K. Esplin, and Richard Lyman Bushman [Salt Lake City: Church Historian’s Press, 2011], 201).

[2] Quoted transcriptions from the JSP follow the spelling and punctuation therein but not the use of strikeouts and other editorial symbols beyond underlining and the bracketing of correcting or clarifying text. I use braces to distinguish my own editorial insertions from the JSP text.
