 
Jane I. Smith was associate dean of academic affairs and lecturer in comparative religion at Harvard University. A graduate of Michigan State University in social science, she received a BD from the Hartford Seminary Foundation and her PhD in the history of religion and Islamic studies from Harvard University. Professor Smith published and lectured extensively on the relation of religious themes to Islam and particularly on women in Islam.
