Mar. 27: Kirtland Temple dedicated by Joseph Smith.

Easter, Apr. 3 Elijah restores sealing keys.

1840Summer: Joseph Smith teaches baptisms for the dead; performed in river at Nauvoo.
1842May 4: Endowments given at Nauvoo in Joseph Smith’s Red Brick Store.
1844June 27: Martyrdom of Joseph Smith.
1846

Feb. 4: Westward exodus from Nauvoo begins.

Apr. 30: Nauvoo Temple dedicated privately by Orson Hyde.

1847

July 24: Pioneers arrive in the Salt Lake Valley.

July 26: Brigham Young sees vision and identifies site for Salt Lake Temple.

Dec. 27: Brigham Young sustained as President of the Church.

1849Fall: Addison Pratt received endowment on Ensign Peak.
1852Endowments being given on the second floor of the Council House in Salt Lake City.

Feb. 14: Site dedicated and ground broken for the Salt Lake Temple by Brigham Young.

Apr. 6: Cornerstones laid for the Salt Lake Temple by Brigham Young.

1855May 5: Endowment House on Temple Square dedicated by Heber C. Kimball.
1858Spring: With approach of hostile army, temple foundations covered over.
1862Spring: Defects discovered when temple foundations excavated, upper part replaced.
1867

Salt Lake Tabernacle entered service.

Fall: Salt Lake Temple walls finally reach ground level.

1871Nov. 9: Ground broken by Brigham Young for St. George Temple.
1874Apr. 1: Commemorative box placed in St. George Temple cornerstone.
1877

Jan. 1: Baptistry and lower main assembly hall dedicated in St. George Temple.

Jan. 11: First endowments for the dead performed in the St. George Temple.

Mar. 1: Pattern of performing vicarious ordinances for more than relatives inaugurated.

Apr. 6: St. George Temple dedicated by Daniel H. Wells.

Apr. 25: Manti Temple site dedicated by Brigham Young.

May 18: Ground broken for Logan Temple by Brigham Young.

Aug. 21: Baptisms performed for prominent men and women at St. George.

Aug. 29: President Brigham Young dies.

Sept. 19: Cornerstones laid for Logan Temple.

1878Oct. 16: St. George Temple’s short tower destroyed by lightning.

Apr. 6: Salt Lake Temple dedication by President Woodruff begins.

Apr. 24: Temple dedication concludes following 31 sessions.

1898Sept.: Lorenzo Snow succeeds Wilford Woodruff as President of the Church.
1901Nov. : Joseph F. Smith becomes President of the Church.
1902Larger annex built at St. George Temple.
1904Mar. 26: Bureau of Information inside Temple Square south gate dedicated.
1916Logan Temple thoroughly refurbished including introduction of electric lights.
1917

St. George Temple remodeled to create two additional sealing rooms.

Dec. 4: Logan Temple fire destroys stairway and badly damages other areas.

1918Nov.: Heber J. Grant becomes President of the Church.
1928Nov. 20: St. George Temple annex completely destroyed by fire.
1939St. George Temple reopens following yearlong construction of permanent ordinance rooms.
1945May: George Albert Smith becomes President of the Church.
1951Apr.: David O. McKay becomes President of the Church.
1955Sept.: Swiss Temple first to use film in presenting endowment.
1963May 27: Nearly completed visitors’ center becomes temporary Salt Lake Temple annex.
1966Mar. 21: New Salt Lake Temple annex enters service.
1967

Aug. 14: Plans to construct temples in Provo and Ogden announced.

Oct. 22: New Salt Lake Temple annex and North Visitors’ Center dedicated by Hugh B. Brown.

1969Sept. 8: and 15 Groundbreakings for Ogden and Provo Temples by Hugh B. Brown.
1970

Jan.: Joseph Fielding Smith becomes President of the Church.

Sept.: 9 Ogden Temple cornerstone placed.

1971

May 21: Provo Temple cornerstone placed.

Dec. 16–30: More than 150,000 visit Ogden Temple during open house.

1972

Jan. 10–29: 246,201 visitors attend Provo Temple open house.

Jan. 18–20: Ogden Temple dedicated in six sessions by President Joseph Fielding Smith.

Feb. 9: Provo Temple dedicated in two sessions by President Smith.

July: Harold B. Lee becomes President of the Church.

1973Dec.: Spencer W. Kimball becomes President of the Church.

Oct. 13–25: 73,967 persons visit St. George Temple open house following renovation.

Nov. 11–12: St. George Temple rededicated in six sessions by President Spencer W. Kimball.

1978June 1: South Visitors’ Center on Temple Square dedicated by President Kimball.
1979

Feb. 6–Mar. 3: 213,184 visit rebuilt Logan Temple during open house.

Mar. 13–15: Logan Temple rededicated by President Kimball following renovation.

June 9: Ground broken for Jordan River Temple by President Kimball.

1981

Aug. 15: Cornerstone ceremony for Jordan River Temple.

Sept. 29–Oct. 31: 568,342 attend Jordan River Temple open house.

Nov. 16–20: Jordan River Temple dedicated in fifteen sessions by Marion G. Romney

1985

June 14–16: Manti Temple rededicated by Gordon B. Hinckley after refurbishment.

Nov. : Ezra Taft Benson becomes President of the Church.

1992May 2: Ground broken for Bountiful Temple by President Ezra Taft Benson.
1993Oct. 9: Ground broken for Mount Timpanogos Temple by Gordon B. Hinckley.

June: Howard W. Hunter becomes President of the Church.

Nov. 5–Dec. 17: More than 870,000 attend Bountiful Temple open house.

Jan. 8–14: Bountiful Temple dedicated in twenty-four sessions by President Howard W. Hunter.

Mar.: Gordon B. Hinckley becomes President of the Church.

Sat., May 13: Ground broken for Vernal Temple by President Hinckley.

1996

Aug. 10–Sept. 21: 679,217 participate in Mount Timpanogos Temple open house.

Oct. 13–19: Mount Timpanogos Temple dedicated in twenty-three sessions by President Hinckley.

1997

Oct. 18–25: Approximately 118,700 visit Vernal Temple open house.

Nov. 2–4: Vernal Temple dedicated in eleven sessions by President Hinckley.

Nov. 17: Groundbreaking in Monticello just six weeks after announcement of temple by Ben E. Banks.

1998

July 16–18: 20,348 visit during brief Monticello Temple open house.

July 26–27: Monticello Temple dedicated in eight sessions by President Hinckley.

2002

Nov. 2–9: Open house for newly enlarged Monticello Temple.

Nov. 17: Monticello Temple rededicated by President Hinckley.

Nov. 18: Angel Moroni statue placed on Ogden Temple.

2003May 12: Angel Moroni statue placed on Provo Temple.

Jan.: Tooele Valley Temple site changed and renamed Deseret Peak Temple.

Mar. 12: Additional ordinance rooms to be built in Salt Lake Temple.

Apr. 4: Smithfield Temple in Cache Valley announced.

May 1: Manti renovation plans changed; temple announced for Ephraim.

May 15: Ground broken in Tooele for Deseret Peak Temple by Brook P. Hales.

June 12: Ground broken for Syracuse Temple by Kevin R. Duncan.

Oct. 2: Manti Temple closed for renovation.

Oct. 3: Heber Valley Temple announced; Provo Temple to be reconstructed.
