Eighth Handcart Company Roster
Historical Introduction
Since the Eighth Handcart Company began its trek to the Salt Lake Valley in 1859, observers have attempted to document its membership. As George Rowley’s group of pioneers traveled across the Nebraska Territory, the Deseret News published “Latter Day Saints’ Immigration . . . 1859,” an article listing all known wagon train or handcart pioneers who were heading to Utah that summer.[1] A century later, Western historians Leroy R. Hafen and Ann W. Hafen published an expanded roster in their classic 1960 study, Handcarts to Zion, listing the names and ages of each company member.[2] Journalist Candy Moulton also published her own membership list of the Eighth Handcart Company in her thoughtful 2019 book, The Mormon Handcart Migration.[3]
Over several decades, employees and volunteers of the Church History Library of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints compiled an in-house Pioneer Database, which they posted online in 2004 as the Mormon Pioneer Overland Travel Database.[4] Seven years later, the Oregon-California Trails Association honored its founding historian Mel Bashore with its Distinguished Service Award for his creation and management of the Mormon Pioneer Overland Travel Database, calling it “the most complete listing of Mormon pioneer emigrants and companies who traveled to Utah from 1847 through 1868.”[5] I have drawn heavily on the Church’s dynamic and ever-growing Church History Biographical Database as a starting point for my research into the lives of each individual handcart company member. The Church’s FamilySearch website has likewise allowed me to explore the lives and records of these remarkable pioneers. Finally, historian Fred E. Woods created “Saints By Sea: Latter-day Saint Immigration to America,” a companion website for those Latter-day Saint pioneers who left their native lands and gathered to Zion across oceans, which helped me tell the story of the 1859 William Tapscott voyage. At least 89 percent of the Eighth Handcart Company pioneers immigrated to the United States on this packet ship.
Ideally (but not always) each company roster entry below lists each immigrant’s full name; family status; birth and death dates; FamilySearch personal identification number; birth country; immigration vessel and date; and age at overland journey. Handcart pioneers whose names appear in the diary transcripts are noted with a beginning asterisk. Whenever enough information is available, I have grouped the immigrants into their family relationships.
