Preface

This volume, covering the period 1853–57, continues the bibliography in the two earlier volumes of the same title. Maintained here are the conventions outlined in the preface to the first volume. The scope of the bibliography remains those books produced by Mormons in support of the Church—the term book meaning any printed piece with one or more pages having text bearing on some Church issue, and Church referring to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with headquarters in Salt Lake City. As in the first two volumes, individual newspaper or magazine articles, maps, prints, bank notes, and ephemeral pieces such as printed forms or elders’ licenses are not included.

The entries in this volume are listed chronologically, with only a few exceptions—the numbering of the entries continues that of the second volume. In a few instances, several pieces are listed and discussed together even though they were published at different times, since a discussion of them as a group is more illuminating than scattered treatments of the individual pieces. As in the preceding volume, a book’s citation in Chad J. Flake and Larry W. Draper’s A Mormon Bibliography 1830–1930 (Provo, Utah, 2004) is given at the end of the discussion of the book, followed by a list of institutional libraries that own an original copy. These censuses should not be viewed as definitive. The Welsh books are listed without discussions but with their citations in Ronald D. Dennis’s Welsh Mormon Writings from 1844 to 1862: A Historical Bibliography (Provo, Utah, 1988).

Predictably, after the appearances of the first two volumes, new works surfaced and new information came to light that should have been included in those volumes. These omissions are collected in the section just following this preface.

Three indexes are at the end of the book—an author/short-title index, a biographical index, and a general subject index. These indexes apply just to this volume. Credits for the illustrations appear at the end of the author/short-title index. A list of codes for the libraries cited in this volume is included just preceding the indexes.
