Marc A. Olshan was an associate professor of sociology at Bethany College in Bethany, West Virginia. He received his PhD from Cornell University, where he wrote his dissertation on the Old Order Amish as a model for development. He has studied Hebrew and taught at Tel Aviv University in Israel.
