Brother Tyler is a resident of Provo, Utah, and the father of eight children. He was born and grew up in Long Beach, California.

He attended the Church College of Hawaii, where he received his BA in speech and dramatic arts. He received a master's and doctorate from Brigham Young University in secondary education and minor in LDS Church History.

He is retired after thirty-nine years in the Church Educational System. The first eleven years he worked in curriculum production as a graphic artist assisting manual writers. During the last twelve years of his career, he was an assistant administrator supervising Church Education (Seminaries, Institutes of Religion, and Church schools) in many areas of the United States and Latin America. Between 1975 and 1977, he had a two-year leave of absence from the seminary program to work on the staff of the Presiding Bishopric of the Church.  For twenty-five years, he was a regular lecturer for BYU Division of Continuing Education in their Know Your Religion and Education Weeks series.

He served as a full-time missionary in Chile from 1960 to 1962. From 1978 to 1982, he served as president of the Coeur d’Alene Idaho Stake. He was president of the Texas San Antonio Mission from 1983 to 1986. From 1990 to 1993, he served as a member of the General Board of the Latter-day Saint Student Association for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. From 2010 to 2014, he served as a branch president at the Provo Missionary Training Center. Since his retirement, he also continues to serve as a Church-service Institute of Religion instructor. Currently, he is deacon’s quorum advisor in his ward, and an ordinance worker in the Provo Temple.
