BILLINGS, Titus

A Brief a count of the suffering and loss of propperty of myself and Family by the people of upper Missouri-

In the Spring of 1832 I started with my Family together with many others for the purpose of finding a permenent home together with other Settlers of that State-

we moved from Kirtland Ohio we started from that place March th 24 & arived in Jackson Co Mo in May & settled on 34 Acres of Land within a half a mile of Independence I built a house & Barn which cost 200 Dollars & got my liveing mostly by teaming for the People of the County and always had a good understanding amongs them but in the Summer and fall of 1832 & knowing that many of my Bretheren was a comeing to this County & not haveing a chance for raiseing a crop that season I thought best to cut a quantity of [—-] hay which ammounted to 24 tons Weight which was hauled 6 miles & was worth 5 Dollars per ton this hay was put into a large stack very long & put upon a farm belonging to Gov Boogs rented by Bishop Partrige and the Inhabitants of that place supposed the hay to belong to Bishop Partridge him this was set on fire and burnt to ashes between sundown & dark this was in Oct it was a year afterwards before I found out the Person that set it on fire there was a man by the name of James Allen asked me if I suspected who set it on fire I told him not he said he knew he was presant when it was done a man by the name of Franklin told him he was a going to commence driveing the Mormons that Evening & would commence by burning Partriges Haystack & wanted him to go & assist him this he said he would be gratified too when called upon and when called upon failed to appear and the act was thrown upon me which was 30 Dollars the next was driveing me from Jackson Co and burning my house and Barn & destoying my improvements with four Acres of Wheet we was driven from that Co in Nov. 1833-we went into Clay Co & there being so many of our People that we [had] to settle in places that was sickly my Family was all taken sick & were not able to help ourselves and lost one year. after liveing 3 seasons in Clay Co we were then compelled to leave that Co in the Spring of 1837-we then moved to Caldwell Co, there I entered 120-Acres of land fenced & broke 15 Acres built me a house which cost me one hundred Dollars besides another piece of land I bought containing 20 Acres of timber land which cost one hundred Dollars I also bought a village Lot which cost forty Dollars all which I have ben driven from together with my farming tools household furniture Provisions &c, &c,-and now driven from the State of Missouri with my Family amidts the blasts of a cold and chilling winter and that too by an unmer[ci]full mob after liveing in Missouri 7 years and never have had a writ served upon me not broken the law in one instance and now I say that these things have come upon me us on acount of the religion which we profess takeing all these things into consideration the loss of my Property cannot be less than two thousand Dollar

Boggs was a prisoner some 2 or 3 days then received orders from Commanding Officer to leave the State immediately then by permission of the officer of the guard I went to my family which I removed as soon as possible into Ray Co. believeing that the Legislator (which was about to assemble) would take measures to restore piace and the citizens to their rights the winter passed away the Legislator adjourned without doing any thing then in consequence of repeated abuses that my family received and my life being threatened I concluded that it would be prudent to leave the State-Being without means to pay my debts and convey my family out of State I was obliged to Sell my land on the conditions proposed by the purchaser the sum recevd being less than half of the value I had to give a warrantee deed and deliver the Duplicates that I recievd at the Land office-Arrived April 5th 1839 in Adams Co.
