I am grateful to Trevan Hatch for first approaching me with the idea of revising and expanding my original 2011 treatment of Holy Week and Easter. A well-trained and competent colleague, he has become a better friend as we have worked together on a project that means so much to both of us. I also thank my wife, Elaine; my children, Rachel, her husband Luke, and Samuel; and close friends, who share with me a love for the Lord Jesus Christ and likewise treasure his mercy, loving-kindness, and grace. We all take similar joy in celebrating holidays such as Christmas, Good Friday, and Easter, occasions that have the wonderful power of turning us more fully toward him.

First, I am deeply grateful for such a passionate colleague as Eric Huntsman. His work on the life and ministry of Jesus has been a source of inspiration for me as I began my career with a zeal toward studying the Judaic contexts of the Gospels and the Jesus traditions. Eric has been a great mentor, specifically regarding the craft of presenting biblical scholarship to a general Latter-day Saint audience. My family (Megan, my five children, and my siblings and parents) has also been very supportive and enthusiastic for this project because it provides ways to emphasize the “Christ” in our Christian discipleship.

Both of us would like to thank the staff of the Religious Studies Center who embraced this project and shepherded it to its completion, in particular Scott Esplin, Joany O. Pinegar, Devan Jensen, Brent Nordgren, designer Carmen Cole, and student editors Erica Smith and Mikaela Wilkins. We also would like to acknowledge the important contribution of our student assistant, Jackson Abhau, who competently assisted us with research, reviewing translations, and proofing early versions of the text.
