The lecturer is a University Professor of Religious Studies, and The Ungerleider Distinguished Scholar of Judaic Studies at Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island. He holds the A.B., Magna cum laude in history, from Harvard College; the M.H.L. from The Jewish Theological Seminary of America; and the Ph.D. from Columbia University. He has held the Henry Fellowship at Oxford University and the Fulbright Scholarship at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, as well as fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Before going to Brown in 1968, he taught for four years at Dartmouth College. He holds the following academic affiliations, awards, and offices:
