External Research Grants

Overview

The BYU Religious Studies Center (RSC) is pleased to provide a limited number of annual research grants in support of scholarship that relates to our mission. This includes research on the restored Church in relation to other cultures, religions, and the behavioral sciences, as well as the study of the ongoing history of the Church and its doctrines, the early Christian church, and the content and contexts of Latter-day Saint standard works (including the Holy Bible). The RSC also seeks to improve interfaith relations and gospel instruction. It is hoped that some of these projects may become future publications for the RSC.

Faculty members at BYU and at other institutions whose research agendas overlap with the mission of the Religious Studies Center are welcome to apply. (Note: this particular grant is not open to Religious Education faculty at BYU in Provo). Preference is given to applications from full-time professors, although applications from adjunct faculty with a productive record of scholarship will be considered.

Deadlines
Funding levels depend upon the nature of the project and the number of applications received. Grant funds may be used for travel, supplies, and student wages. The deadline for 2025 applications is March 31. Applicants will be notified approximately three weeks after the deadline, with funding dispersed shortly thereafter. Funds must be spent during the calendar year in which they are provided.

RSC funding is granted with the understanding that an emailed summary report on RSC monies spent and the progress of the project will be submitted by grant recipients in December of the calendar year for which funding was provided (use the same address as for applications; see below). In the progress report, please detail if you are considering the RSC as a potential publisher for the project. If not, please detail which publishers you are considering and why.

Applications
Application packets must include: a completed application form (including your proposed budget), a brief prospectus of your research project (3 pages max), and an abbreviated curriculum vitae (5 pages max). Applicants must also arrange for one letter of support (from your department chair or equivalent supervisor) for your project to be sent by the letter writer on letterhead stationery to the address below.
