The Tabernacle: An Old and Wonderful Friend

Press Release:

Book featuring the Salt Lake Tabernacle released by the Religious Studies Center

We bid good-bye to an old and wonderful friend. . . . A building develops a personality of its own. The Spirit of the Lord has been in this structure. It is sacred unto us.

—Gordon B. Hinckley at the concluding session

of the October 1999 general conference

referring to the restoration of the Tabernacle

In 1947 Stewart L. Grow, grandson of Henry Grow, the bridge builder who built the roof structure of the historic Tabernacle, wrote a thesis on the building of the Tabernacle. Now, sixty years later, just after the Tabernacle’s renovation, historian Scott C. Esplin released this in-depth review of the Tabernacle’s construction. In The Tabernacle: An Old and Wonderful Friend, the editor examines and enhances Grow’s original thesis. This full-color publication features beautiful recent and historic photos. A new introduction placing the thesis in historical context has also been added.

Changes continue to be made to the Tabernacle itself. Though Grow details some of these, including the addition of the balcony, changes in seating, and improvements in safety and technology, significant improvements continue to be made to the structure. Chief among them is the recent renovation the building has undergone in an effort to preserve and protect it. Details of these important changes augment Grow’s excellent work. The venue continues to serve as a spiritual and social gathering place for the community, hosting significant gatherings of Church members as well as other civic functions. Even though larger and more modern facilities have been added to Salt Lake City, the Tabernacle continues to be an important part of the downtown landscape.Expanding and updating Grow’s study further clarifies our picture regarding the importance of the Tabernacle to the Church and the Salt Lake community.
