Press Release: Religious Studies Center publishes a book to honor Robert J. Matthews
Created so Religious Education at BYU could honor Robert J. Matthews for his eightieth birthday, this book is a collection of essays reflecting Matthews’ varied interests and academic loves. Featuring chapters on the Bible, Book of Mormon, and Church history and doctrine, A Witness for the Restoration: Essays to Honor Robert J. Matthews also includes a bibliography in chronological order of scholarly publications by Matthews.
As He finished quoting Isaiah, Christ further commanded the people to “search” the prophet’s writings “diligently,” assuring them that all things Isaiah spoke “have been and shall be, even according to the words which he spake” (3 Nephi 23:1, 3). What a wonderful endorsement of Isaiah! As Robert J. Matthews has said, “It’s nice to be able to quote the words of the Savior—it’s even nicer to be quoted by Him.” —Terry B. Ball, in his chapter “Isaiah and the Restoration of Israel”
It is an honor to contribute to the Festschrift for Robert J. Matthews. I have always appreciated Bob’s friendly and supportive nature and the way he has employed the Restoration as a lens through which to better understand the ancient world. —Dana M. Pike in the notes of his chapter “Before Jeremiah Was: Divine Election in the Ancient Near East”
I am grateful for the wonderful contribution of Robert J. Matthews throughout his career. . . . During the winter semester of 2004, I attended a faculty doctrinal seminar that Brother Matthews led. During that seminar we discussed the Lectures on Faith. The topic of this paper is an outgrowth of a conversation we had during those discussions. —Gaye Strathearn in the notes of her chapter “The Faith of Christ”
Edited by Kent P. Jackson and Andrew C. Skinner, the book includes chapters by Kent Jackson, S. Kent Brown, Joseph Fielding McConkie, and Robert L. Millet.
